Always a problem for historical novelists, those ever-changing names. In my work in progress, though, a character's decision to call another character by a childhood nickname or an intimate name is a significant choice, and can depend on the situation. So somehow there needs to be room for characters to make such choices, but then at the same time we writers must make sure there's adequate clarity for the reader. Just one more thing to worry about!
